Things to Do

The Sunriver Nature Center is the home of a nice collection of kid-friendly stuff. Crawl through our Creature Cave, enjoy hands-on activities, meet our Animal Ambassadors, and more! We are also home to the only Botanical Garden in Central Oregon, blooming soon!

It's quite a collection.

Our star is a churning maelstrom of hot gases with far more features than you might think. Look for sunspots as big as Earth in our white light filtered telescope. See surface details and loops of gas called prominences in our hydrogen-alpha filtered telescopes. Staff will gladly explain what you are looking at, and for.

Close-up views of Earth's own star.

Our staff of enthusiastic naturalists bring it all to life. Learn about the behavior of big barn owls or get a taste of tiny little frog ponds. Our staff lead, mentor and inform in a friendly way that keeps kids of all ages engaged. If you're out for a bike ride around Sunriver or just looking for something fun to do, stop in for a look around.

Local experts make it entertaining for the entire family.

The Oregon Observatory. Billions and billions of sights to see. When our roofs disappear we have the largest collection of telescopes for public viewing in the United States.

During the day, grab the whole family and hop on your bikes and head along Sunriver’s bike paths toward the nature center. A team of naturalists await your visit and are eager to introduce the natural world to curious minds. Children and adults will enjoy seeking out snakes, lizards, frogs and salamanders within the dark corners of the Creature Cave. Stroll through the botanical garden, an oasis for wildflowers, pollinators and birds. Visit live owls, hawks and an eagle and learn about their stories of rehabilitation. Complete your daytime visit with wildlife watching from the shore of Lake Aspen and a stop at the observatory for special views of the sun through a telescope.

After dark, make a plan to visit the observatory, the largest of its kind in the country, for awe-inspiring views of the night sky. Sunriver’s elevation, dark skies free of light pollution, and crisp clear air, make it the perfect spot for stargazing. Over a dozen telescopes ranging in size and focused at different objects in the night sky are available for enjoying spectacular views and learning about our universe. From crystal clear views of the moon and various planets, to star clusters and nebulas, the observatory’s views will amaze first time stargazers and amateur astronomers alike. Round out the evening by joining an astronomer for a special presentation and a laser-guided constellation tour outdoors.

Looking for more ways to enjoy the great outdoors during your visit to Sunriver? Programs and activities geared for children, adults, and families, are held throughout the year. Bird walks, lectures, and workshops are offered in the spring, summer and fall and provide ample opportunities for the lifelong learner to enjoy nature and the cosmos. Families can enjoy a Star Dome planetarium show, build and launch rockets, or join a nature hike together. While, immersive camp experiences are offered all summer long to make sure your budding naturalist has a memorable and educational summer vacation!
